Putignano Carnival has very ancient roots, dating back to 1394, when the relics of Saint Stephen were moved from the coast to the inland area. The spontaneous welcome by local farmers—who left their fields to join the procession with songs and satirical verses—gave birth to the famous Propaggini, a ritual that still opens the Carnival every December 26th.
It is this unique blend of sacred and secular traditions that makes the festival so special.
The true heart of the Carnival is the spectacular papier-mâché allegorical floats, reaching up to 15 meters in height. Each creation is crafted by local artisans in historic workshops and stands as a masterpiece of technique, creativity, and satire.
During the official parades—on the dates listed above—Putignano turns into a vibrant stage filled with color, music, irony, and shared celebration.
Among the most beloved characters is Farinella, the official mask of the Carnival. With its colorful costume and jingling bells, it represents the playful and popular soul of the event. Its name comes from a traditional local dish made from chickpea and barley flour, symbolizing simplicity and strong rural roots.
